Augustin Dumay is een van de laatste waardige erfgenamen in de grote klassieke Europese traditie, en in het bijzonder in de koninklijke Belgische lijn van Ysaÿe en Grumiaux. Het grote publiek ontmoette hem door zijn medewerking met Herbert von Karajan, zijn concerten met het Filharmonisch Orkest van Berlijn en zijn opnamen voor EMI, o.a. de vioolconcerten van Mendelssohn en Tsjaikovski met het London Symphony Orchestra.

Zijn bijzondere plaats als klassieke uitvoerder heeft zich sterk uitgedrukt in referentie opnamen zoals de Concerti van Mozart met de Camerata Academica Salzburg (viool en directie, Deutsche Grammophon) « zonder meer een van de mooiste uitvoeringen van Mozarts vioolconcerto’s ooit uitgegeven » (Julian Haylock, Classic CD) en de integrale opname van Beethovens vioolsonaten met Maria João Pires (Deutsche Grammophon) « die men naast Grumiaux en Haskil, Menuhin en Kempff, of Perlman en Ashkenazy kan plaatsen« (International Record Review, Londen)

Kamermuziek en orkestdirectie zijn twee essentiële aspecten van zijn artistieke loopbaan. Dit brengt meer en meer orkesten tot uitnodigingen als dirigent: tot 2013 is Augustin Dumay chef-dirigent van het Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie. Nadat hij « Principal Guest » was bij Kansai Philharmonic Orchestra (Osaka, Japan) is geweest is hij vanaf 2011 voor vijf jaar Muziekdirecteur van dit prestigieus orkest geworden.

Augustin Dumay speelt regelmatig met de grootste wereldorkesten, onder leiding van de meest befaamde dirigenten van de dag. Hij is daarnaast ook zeer aandachtig voor de nieuwe generatie muzikanten. Zo is hij « master in residence » geworden aan de Muziekkapel Koningin Elisabeth in het kader van een nieuw Europees topproject, waar hij jonge beloftevolle violisten voorbereidt op een muziekcarrière op hoog niveau. Veel van hen hebben al de eerste prijzen behaald bij grote internationale muziekwedstrijden.

Filmregisseur Gérard Corbiau (Le Maître de Musique, Farinelli…) heeft een portret gerealiseerd, Augustin Dumay – Laisser une trace dans le cœur, die binnenkort verschijnt in DVD.

De opnames van Augustin Dumay, een veertigtal referenties waarmee hij enkele prestigieuze prijzen won (Grand Prix du Disque, Gramophone Award, Grammy Award, Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik, The Record Academy Award…) zijn beschikbaar bij Deutsche Grammophon en EMI. Binnenkort verschijnt zijn opname van Beethovens en Brahms’ vioolconcerten.

Augustin Dumay is one of the last representatives of the great European classical tradition and, in particular, of its Franco-Belgian branch which was previously embodied by Ysaÿe and Grumiaux. He first came to the attention of the European public thanks to his meeting with Herbert von Karajan, his concerts with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and his recordings for EMI, a.o. the Concerto’s of Mendelssohn and Tshaikovsky with the London Symphony Orchestra.

His distinctive place as the « grand classical stylist » amongst the violinists of our time has been corroborated by his outstanding recordings of the Mozart concertos with the Camerata Academica Salzburg (violin and conducting, Deutsche Grammophon) « without exaggeration one of the finest Mozart violin concerto discs ever made. » (Julian Haylock, Classic CD) and Beethoven’s complete sonatas for violin and piano with Maria João Pires (Deutsche Grammophon) « which set surely ranks with Grumiaux and Haskil, Menuhin and Kempff or Perlman and Ashkenazy…« .(International Record Review).

Chamber music and orchestral conducting are equally important in his musical trajectory today, attracting increasing interest from orchestras who are inviting Augustin Dumay to assume their direction: he has been appointed Musical Director of the Royal Chamber Orchestra of Wallonia until 2013 and, having been the Principal Guest Conductor of the Kansai Philharmonic Orchestra in Osaka, he takes up the position of Musical Director as from 2011 for five seasons.

Augustin Dumay performs regularly with the leading orchestras in the world under the direction of the greatest contemporary conductors. He is also very much involved in the developement of a new generation of musicians ; as a master in residence at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel, a new European pilot project based in Brussels, he coaches talented young violinists. Most have met the success in the main international music competitions, and their level is attested by a recent, highly praised recording of the complete Vieuxtemps violin concerto’s (Fuga Libera FUG575).

The film-maker Gérard Corbiau (Le Maître de Musique, Farinelli…) made a documentary film about him –Augustin Dumay – Laisser une trace dans le cœur – shortly to be released on DVD.

His discography includes some forty recordings, many of which have received prestigious awards – Gramophone Awards, Audiophile audition, Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik, Grand Prix du Disque, The Record Academy Award – and is available on the EMI and Deutsche Grammophon labels. His next recordings (2012) will be devoted to Concerto’s of Beethoven and Brahms.

La critique internationale le compare aux grands violonistes du XX^esiècle, et sa place particulière de « grand classique-styliste » s’est vue confirmée par des enregistrements incontournables chez Deutsche Grammophon : l’intégrale des sonates de Beethoven avec Maria João Pires « à classer sûrement aux côtés de Grumiaux-Haskil, Menuhin-Kempff, ou Perlman-Ashkenazy » (Record Review), les trios de Brahms où « le legato de Milstein dans le jeu de Dumay est admirablement évident » (Gramophone), ou encore les concertos de Mozart avec la Camerata Academica Salzburg, « sans exagération l’un des plus beaux enregistrements des concertos pour violon de Mozart jamais réalisés » (Classic CD), où il « confirme qu’il est un merveilleux interprète mozartien, comme le furent jadis Stern ou Grumiaux”(Classica).

Augustin Dumay a d’abord été découvert par le public grâce à sa rencontre avec Herbert von Karajan, ses concerts avec l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Berlin et ses enregistrements pour EMI (Concertos de Mendelssohn, Tchaïkovski, Saint-Saëns, Lalo). Depuis, il se produit régulièrement avec les meilleurs orchestres du monde, sous la direction des plus grands chefs actuels.

Parallèlement à son activité de violoniste, il a développé au cours des dix dernières années une intense activité de chef d’orchestre. Outre le poste de Directeur Musical de l’Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie qu’il occupe depuis 2003, il a été nommé en 2011 Directeur Musical du Kansai Philharmonic Orchestra (Osaka). Il est régulièrement invité à diriger des orchestres comme l’English Chamber Orchestra, le New Jersey Symphony Orchestra ou le Sinfonia Varsovia.

Depuis 2004, il est l’un des maîtres en résidence à la Chapelle Musicale Reine Elisabeth (Bruxelles), où il enseigne à quelques jeunes violonistes de très haut niveau, la plupart lauréats de grands concours internationaux.

Le cinéaste Gérard Corbiau (Le Maître de Musique, Farinelli) a réalisé un film portrait, Augustin Dumay, laisser une trace dans le cœur.

Sa discographie – une quarantaine d’enregistrements dont la plupart ont été récompensés par des prix prestigieux (Grammophon Awards, Audiophile audition, Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik, Grand Prix du Disque, The Record Academy Award) – est disponible chez EMI, Deutsche Grammophon et Onyx Classics.

Pour Onyx, il a enregistré dernièrement un CD Saint-Saëns à la tête du Kansai Philharmonic Orchestra, et, avec le pianiste Louis Lortie, l’album Franck & Strauss Violin Sonatas, par « l’un des grands violonistes d’aujourd’hui » (The Strad).

Ses prochains enregistrements seront consacrés aux concertos de Bartók, Brahms, Beethoven et Mendelssohn, avec l’Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, le Bayerischer Rundfunk, le Sinfonia Varsovia et l’Orpheus Chamber Orchestra.
